HC Deb 06 May 1959 vol 605 c375
7. Mr. Lipton

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he will reduce the number of Army barracks in Central London.

Mr. H. Fraser

No, Sir.

Mr. Lipton

Does the hon. Gentleman still think it necessary to have so many Army barracks occupying valuable sites in the West End? Is it not possible to dispense with that horrible eyesore in Knightsbridge without detriment to military needs?

Mr. Fraser

No, Sir. Barracks are provided for troops on ceremonial and other duties in Central London, which we regard as an extremely important function which is accepted by the public.
