HC Deb 05 May 1959 vol 605 c203
30. Mr. G. M. Thomson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the estimated cost to date of the state of emergency in Nyasaland.

Mr. J. Amery

One hundred and twenty-five thousand pounds is the estimated cost to the Nyasaland Government.

Mr. Thomson

Will the Under-Secretary of State say whether that includes the cost of erecting the detention camps? What will be the cost to the Federal Government, and in future will Ministers add that cost to the total financial benefits which the Nyasaland people are supposed to be receiving through Federation?

Mr. Amery

It is not for me to comment on the Federal aspect. I will look into the problem whether the cost includes the erection of detention camps.
