HC Deb 05 March 1959 vol 601 c598
3. Mr. Brockway

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations what progress has been made in the establishment of a Legislative Council for Bechuanaland.

Mr. Alport

I have nothing to add to the reply I gave my hon. Friend the Member for Haltemprice (Mr. Wall) on 19th February.

Mr. Brockway

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that that is some time ago and that one hopes that very rapid progress is being made in this very hopeful development in a British Protectorate?

Mr. Alport

On that occasion I said to my hon. Friend who asked the Question that my noble Friend hoped to reply to the Joint Advisory Council of the Protectorate at its next meeting in April. I am sure that the House will think it proper that, as that reply is in response to a Resolution of the Council, the information regarding my noble Friend's decision should be conveyed to it first.
