§ 37. Mr. Delargyasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies by what authority the Governor of Cyprus has confiscated 5,000 copies of a book published in Greece, the title of which has been sent to him.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydBy the authority of Section 58A of the Cyprus Criminal Code Law.
§ Mr. DelargyDoes not the Colonial Secretary realise that the withholding of this book, which is about the experiences of a man detained for eighteen months without trial and without charge in a camp in Cyprus, is most unjust? Is it not also a very silly decision, because sooner or later the book will be published, and it is now getting an exceedingly good advertisement and will have a much wider circulation than it normally would have had?
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydNo, Sir. I fully support the action of the Governor in this matter. The Governor's liberal approach to the problems of Cyprus is well-known. The circulation of this book in Cyprus would certainly stir up feelings entirely contrary to the spirit of constructive co-operation which flowed from the London Conference.
