HC Deb 29 June 1959 vol 608 c15
24. Mr. D. Griffiths

asked the Paymaster-General to what extent his Department is encouraging a greater advertising campaign of the approved smokeless fuels and their respective domestic burning appliances.

Sir I. Horobin

My noble Friend and my right hon. Friends the Secretary of State for Scotland and the Minister of Housing and Local Government are encouraging the promotion of clean air by all appropriate means including advertising campaigns on the subject by many local authorities. The advertising of particular products must, however, remain the concern of individual manufacturers.

Mr. Griffiths

Whilst appreciating the Parliamentary Secretary's reply, may I ask whether he is not aware of the utmost necessity for the strictest collaboration between these people? It is a question not only of higher grades but of the utilisation and purchase of materials. Many local authorities throughout the country are developing sites regardless of the existing sites. The closest co-operation would be of great advantage to the industry.

Sir I. Horobin

If the hon. Member has any specific suggestions for improving the present close co-operation, I shall be very happy to consider them.
