HC Deb 09 June 1959 vol 606 cc788-9
9. Sir W. Anstruther-Gray

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland to what extent it is proposed that fly-over roads should take the place of roundabouts in his plans for Scottish road construction over the next five years.

Mr. N. Macpherson

Fly-overs are being planned on the approaches to the Forth Bridge and at a number of junctions on the Glasgow—Stirling and Glasgow—Carlisle roads.

Sir W. Anstruther-Gray

While thanking my hon. Friend for that reply, may I ask whether he will bear in mind that fly-overs are much safer than roundabouts and, therefore, as a long-term policy they are obviously a good thing to aim at?

Mr. Macpherson

I will certainly bear that in mind. Fly-overs will be constructed where they are justified, but they are more expensive and one has to have regard to the economic position as well as the physical conditions and the traffic I hat requires to use them.
