HC Deb 08 June 1959 vol 606 cc606-7
7. Mr. Patrick Maitland

asked the Minister of Labour whether, since the introduction of new employment at Douglas, Lanarkshire, would benefit a wide area of unregistered underemployment in the Upper Ward of Lanarkshire, he will assist an incoming firm in training local labour.

Mr. Iain Macleod

I would refer my non. Friend to the Answer given to him on 18th March. The particular proposal set out in his recent letter to my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Secretary is being considered, and my hon. Friend will write to him as soon as possible.

Mr. Maitland

While thanking my right hon. Friend for that reply, will he bear in mind that once or twice recently one has been approached by a firm which might consider seeking to obtain factory space but would first wish to consider whether it is possible to get some local workers trained, perhaps in a local building available, in advance of opening the factory? Will my right hon. Friend bear that in mind when lie studies that matter and also realise that we are grateful for the attention that he is giving to it?

Mr. Macleod indicated assent.
