HC Deb 03 June 1959 vol 606 c184
17. Mr. Holt

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation if he is satisfied that, in the plans for the building of motorways, adequate provision at sufficiently frequent intervals is being made for the safe passage of pedestrians across the motorway; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Nugent

Yes, Sir. On the London—Birmingham motorway and the Preston and Lancaster by-passes, for example, the crossings above or below the motorway suitable for pedestrians will average rather more than one every half-mile.

Mr. Holt

I appreciate that, but the kind of motorway of which I was thinking, where the problem might arise, is the intended motorway continuation up through the Lune Valley. Where motorways go through sparsely populated country they may split small communities. Will the members of those communities have adequate facilities for crossing the motorways without going miles round?

Mr. Nugent

Yes, Sir. The examples which I have given cover such neighbourhoods, particularly on the London—Birmingham motorway. The hon. Member can be assured that wherever the motorway crosses an existing public footpath or public road a provision of some kind is made in the area consisting of an access either over or under the new motorway.
