HC Deb 23 July 1959 vol 609 c1521
53. Mr. Royle

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what shipping lines operate from British Guiana to Venezuela, in view of the possibilities of mutual trade between the two territories.

Mr. J. Amery

Saguenay Terminals Limited, a Canadian shipping company, operate a service from Canada to Georgetown in British Guiana which also calls at Maracaibo in Venezuela at approximately monthly intervals. The Royal Netherlands Steamship Company also operate a less frequent service between Georgetown and La Guaira.

Mr. Royle

Is it not a fact that the transport arrangements in these territories are appalling, although promises of aid and improvement have been made for a long time? Cannot something be done about the transport between the various islands?

Mr. Amery

As the hon. Gentleman will be aware, air communications have greatly improved and I had an opportunity of experiencing this myself in the last few months. I agree that there is still room for considerable improvement in sea traffic.
