HC Deb 23 July 1959 vol 609 c1505
55. Mrs. White

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what inquiry has been made into the recent disturbance at the boys' school at Machakos, Kenya; and with what result.

Mr. J. Amery

An inquiry has been held by the school's Board of Governors. They decided that because of the inexcusable indiscipline of the pupils, the school should be closed until the September term; that the school prefects and form IV pupils should be expelled at once, although individual expulsions among the latter would be conditionally reviewed on application; and that the principal should be asked to submit proposals for improving discipline.

Mrs. White

Is the hon. Gentleman not aware that the quality and numbers of the teaching staff are inadequate, and could something be done to deal with that situation?

Mr. Amery

The inquiry did not suggest that this would be justified, and it certainly did not suggest that it justified a strike on the part of the pupils.
