HC Deb 23 July 1959 vol 609 c1498
22. Mr. Stonehouse

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many British protected persons of Nyasaland are now detained without trial in Southern Rhodesia and Nyasaland, respectively; and when it is proposed that they should be released.

The Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Julian Amery)

My latest information is that, on 18th July, a total of 399 were still held in detention in Nyasaland. They will be released when the Governor is satisfied that they no longer constitute a threat to public order.

Mr. Stonehouse

Will the Under-Secretary ask his right hon. Friend to release all men who have been cleared of disgraceful smears against them or bring charges against them in the courts, and, if it is not proposed to release these men, what further shabby excuses can be produced to keep them in detention?

Mr. Amery

No, Sir, though my right hon. Friend will have overheard the hon. Gentleman's supplementary question.
