HC Deb 23 July 1959 vol 609 cc1518-9
46. Mr. Mason

asked the Prime Minister where the three provincial exhibitions, already planned, illustrating the uses of radio-isotopes in industry will be sited; and when they will take place.

The Prime Minister

The Atomic Energy Authority informs me that the first of the three provincial exhibitions referred to in my reply to the hon. Member on 16th April will take place in Sheffield in November or December. The others will probably be in Bradford and Bristol early next year. Other towns may be visited later.

Mr. Mason

While thanking the Prime Minister for that reply and appreciating that Sheffield is being recognised and is, in fact, getting the first exhibition, may I ask him if the Atomic Energy Authority has in mind a section within these exhibitions emphasising the need for observing safety precautions in the use of radio-isotopes and radioactive substances?

The Prime Minister

I will take note of that point and see that it is considered by the Authority.

Mr. W. R. Williams

In view of the fact that the first exhibition is to be in Yorkshire, would it not be very appropriate that the second should be in Lancashire, particularly in Manchester?

Mr. Ellis Smith

Where was the research done?

The Prime Minister

While I do not think that ancient rivalries should enter into these new and modern methods, I think we ought to keep a fair balance.
