HC Deb 22 July 1959 vol 609 c1429

Lords Amendment: In page 3, line 5, leave out "unnecessary."

Mr. Iain Macleod

I beg to move, That this House doth agree with the Lords in the said Amendment

This Amendment is put forward to meet a point made, I think, by the hon. Member for Lewisham, North (Mr. MacDermot) on Report. On reflection, i; seemed to me a thoroughly sound point, and I think that we can leave out the word "unnecessary."

Mr. MacDermot

I would like to thank the Minister for putting forward this Amendment in another place. As he said, it arose out of our discussion on Report, when we moved an Amendment to leave out the words … so far as is reasonably practicable … During the discussion, however, it seemed that perhaps the better way to deal with this was to cut down the exemption by leaving out the word '" unnecessary." We thought that the wording was too wide, and we are glad that the Minister has been persuaded by our arguments.

Question put and agreed to.
