HC Deb 14 July 1959 vol 609 c185
7. Mr. F. Noel-Baker

asked the Minister of Works what steps he is taking to provide, on the site, a large-scale model of Stonehenge in its ancient and undamaged state, in view of the increasing public interest in the monument, the rising receipts from admission fees, and the recommendation of the Ancient Monuments Board.

Mr. Molson

A design of a model suitable for outdoor exhibition is being prepared and an estimate of cost worked out. When these are available I shall be able to consider this suggestion further.

Mr. Noel-Baker

Whilst I am sure that the Minister's reply will be welcomed, can he say how long he thinks it will be before he will be in a position to give a final decision on the matter?

Mr. Molson

I do not think it will be more than a few weeks now.

Mr. N. Nicolson

If my right hon. Friend proceeds with the idea, with which I entirely agree, would he ensure that the stone used in the model is the same as the original stone, including that which came from South Wales, and that the model will not be in cement or some other modern material?

Mr. Molson

I will certainly take that interesting suggestion into account. Naturally it would add considerably to the cost of the model if the same special stone is used for it as was used when the original was erected.
