§ 35. Mr. Sorensenasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what advance has been made, and is contemplated, in respect of primary education in Aden and in the Aden Protectorate, in particular, the extension of education for girls; and how many boys and girls, respectively, are now receiving primary education in the two areas.
§ Mr. J. AmeryDuring the past five years the number of primary school pupils in the Colony increased from 4,714 to 7,680. In the Protectorate the increase was from 5,456 to 11,555.
These figures include increases in primary school girl pupils from 1,562 to 2,607 in the Colony, and from 269 to 627 in the Protectorate.
Proposals for further expansion of primary education are under consideration.
§ Mr. SorensenCan the Minister state when we are likely to get a more definite report as to the acceleration of education, particularly for girls, in respect not only of the Colony but of the Protectorate?
§ Mr. AmeryIn the Colony every encouragement is given, but the hon. Member will realise that there are traditional obstacles to rapid progress in these matters.
