HC Deb 29 January 1959 vol 598 cc1233-4
15. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that the Corporation of the City of Aberdeen have invited Mr. Kamensky, Russia's trade representative in Great Britain, to meet them in Aberdeen or in London; and what steps he now proposes to take, in furtherance of his official policy of encouraging trade between Scotland and the Soviet Union, to assist the expansion of trade between the two countries.

Sir D. Eccles

Yes, Sir. The Board of Trade is always ready to advise and assist any trader interested in openings for exports to the Soviet Union.

Mr. Hughes

Does not the right hon. Gentleman realise that that is a quite inadequate Answer? Really, the Board of Trade may always be ready to do anything, but it has done nothing in this case. Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this Question has been on the Notice Paper for some little time, and that he has had ample opportunity and time to bring the parties together and to fix an actual date? Has he done so? If not, will he do so?

Sir D. Eccles

It was the Board of Trade Controller who advised the Town Clerk of Aberdeen to invite Mr. Kamensky.
