8. Mrs. Whiteasked the President of the Board of Trade when it is proposed to introduce legislation to amend the quota provisions of the Cinematograph Films Act.
§ Sir D. EcclesNot less than six months before September, 1960, when the Act expires.
Mrs. WhiteIs not the President of the Board of Trade aware that other 1227 matters besides the quota are concerned in this part of the Act—for example, co-production with other countries—which are causing considerable concern in the industry, and should not legislation be expedited?
§ Sir D. EcclesThe hon. Lady has so much experience of the industry that she must know that an enormous number of consultations have to take place. If we could bring forward legislation speedily, I would be glad, but I do not see any real prospect.
Mrs. WhiteSurely, these consultations have taken place over the last two or three years, and the Bill, we believe, is in draft. Is the right hon. Gentleman really saying that there is to be an early General Election and that, therefore, he cannot bring in the Bill?
§ Sir D. EcclesNo, Sir. I am not saying that.
