HC Deb 28 January 1959 vol 598 c1068
48. Mr. Strauss

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether the Government have now decided how they will implement the undertaking given in May last year, during the negotiations with the British Transport Commission over the increase in railwaymen's wages, that the Commission would be relieved of the obligation to maintain road bridges over the railways and level crossings.

Mr. Watkinson

This has proved a difficult and complicated problem, but I hope to announce the Government's decision very soon.

Mr. Strauss

That is exactly the same Answer as the Minister gave me nearly three months ago, in November. Is there any chance of getting a decision in this matter within the next few weeks?

Mr. Watkinson

Yes, I think there is. I do not think that the Commission will lose very much by the delays.
