HC Deb 22 January 1959 vol 598 c379
1. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Minister of Education what steps he is taking to relieve teachers of duties in connection with the school meals service; and whether he will make a statement.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Education (Sir Edward Boyle)

My right hon. Friend proposes to issue a new circular to replace Circular 97 of 1946. He is at present discussing this with associations representing both local authorities and teachers.

Mr. Thomas

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that that is good news, and that the teachers have always been willing to go the extra mile on voluntary service for the children in their care, but that the Ministry has no right to exploit that good will on their part? Any steps that he takes now will be welcomed.

Sir E. Boyle

I thought the hon. Gentleman would think that a good start to the new year. My right hon. Friend is anxious that the routine work falling on the teachers should be reduced to the minimum and agrees that teachers should be given outside help with school meals in the form of supervisory and clerical assistance.
