HC Deb 26 February 1959 vol 600 cc1288-9
38. Sir C. Taylor

asked the Minister of Education what estimate he has made of the cost to public funds of implementing the principle that any boy or girl winning a State scholarship to a school or university should be entitled to receive his or her award in full, together with all benefits accruing thereto, irrespective of the income of their parents or guardians.

Sir E. Boyle

About £1¼ million.

Sir C. Taylor

While thanking my hon. Friend for that reply, may I ask whether he has seen the Motion on the Order Paper in the names of a number of hon. Members and myself, pleading with the Chancellor of the Exchequer that something on these lines should be done?

[That, in the opinion of this House, any boy or girl winning a State scholarship to a school or university should be entitled to receive his or her award in full and all benefits accruing thereto, irrespective of the income of their parents or guardians.]

Sir E. Boyle

Motions on the Order Paper are, in the first instance, the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Leader of the House. I have no doubt that the Colin Anderson Committee will take due note of this Question this afternoon.
