§ 43. Mr. Jannerasked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that men who previously have been working in stone quarries in Leicestershire are no longer so employed because of the holdup of the road work in that county; and what steps he proposes to take to find employment for them.
§ Mr. Iain MacleodNo, Sir. There are only five men registered as unemployed in Leicestershire who last worked in stone quarries. My local officers hope to be able to submit them to suitable vacancies shortly.
§ Mr. JannerDoes the right hon. Gentleman realise that the quickest way of absorbing these men and getting other men back to the quarries is to allow the work on the motorway to continue in Leicestershire? Is he aware that the quarries are there, that the men are there, and that Leicester County Council has approved the road work? Is he aware that, as far back as September, although he said that the matter rested with Leicester County Council, a plan was submitted which has not yet been accepted by his colleague the Minister of Transport? Will the right hon. Gentleman get in touch with the Minister of Transport and see that something is done quickly?
§ Mr. MacleodPerhaps the hon. Member will let me consult with my right hon. Friend.
