HC Deb 12 February 1959 vol 599 cc1327-8
19. Mrs. Castle

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the results of the investigation by the Kenya Government into the existence of a subversive organisation on the lines of the Kenya African Union or of Mau Mau, on information supplied to the Kenya Government by Group Captain Briggs.

Mr. J. Amery

Investigation has not revealed the existence of a new secret society but it has reinforced the knowledge that Kiama Kia Muingi, which is a variation of Mau Mau, has gone very deep in certain areas.

Mrs. Castle

Is the hon. Member aware that the House would be very glad to have confirmation of the belief that Group Captain Briggs's allegations were hysterical and exaggerated? Is he aware that the only way of preventing the re-emergence of an underground subversive movement in Kenya is to allow Africans to organise a national political movement so that their grievances can be stated constitutionally and above board? Will not action be taken on this matter before it is too late?

Mr. Amery

I cannot confirm the first part of the hon. Lady's supplementary question. She will remember, of course, that African political meetings did not prevent the emergence of Mau Mau.
