HC Deb 12 February 1959 vol 599 cc1355-6
54. Mr. John Hall

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies to what extent it is now Government policy that the Gambia and the British Cameroons should be absorbed into adjacent French territories and if he will make a statement.

Mr. J. Amery

We have no such policy as regards the Gambia, though we would naturally welcome closer co-operation in cultural and economic matters with the neighbouring French Territory.

As regards the Cameroons I would invite my hon. Friend's attention to the reply which I gave yesterday to the hon. Member for Eton and Slough (Mr. Brockway).

Mr. Hall

Is my hon. Friend aware that I found it a little difficult to hear what he said? Will he assure the House that should there be any intention to change the present status of either the Gambia or the British Cameroons by their association with any other Territories, the populations of those Territories will have an opportunity to express their own views about it?

Mr. Amery

Yes, indeed.
