HC Deb 11 February 1959 vol 599 c1172
29. Mr. S. Silverman

asked the Minister of Defence what evidence has recently been placed before him that Intelligence personnel in the Armed Forces are given instruction and training in the extraction of information from prisoners of war by improper physical methods; by what authority this is done; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Sandys

None, Sir. All training of this kind is in strict accord with Article 17 of the 1949 Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

Mr. Silverman

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman whether he has made any recent inquiries about this, and if I send him a letter I have received from a gentleman who claims to have gone through a course of this kind, will he investigate it and undertake not to take any proceedings under the Official Secrets Act, or anything of that kind, which would prevent him from looking at the evidence and examining it?

Mr. Sandys

Most certainly, Sir.
