HC Deb 10 February 1959 vol 599 c989
24. Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is to be contained in the gallery of modern art announced for Edinburgh; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. N. Macpherson

This is a matter for decision by the Trustees of the National Galleries of Scotland, but my right hon. Friend understands that the new gallery is likely to be used for paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings by artists of the present century.

Mr. Grimond

Are any of these pictures already in public control? For instance, is it proposed to move any paintings out of the National Gallery into this gallery?

Mr. Macpherson

Yes, Sir. In its collection the National Gallery already has works by leading Scottish painters of the century. It is hoped that works by present and past Scottish artists, which have been collected by bodies such as the Scottish Modern Arts Association and the Scottish Committee of the Arts Council, will become available.
