asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the total amount collected by Stamp Duty on Stock Exchange transactions.

About £30 million in the current year.

Mr. Grimond

Without for one moment asking the Financial Secretary to anticipate anything at all, I should like his assurance that he will bear in mind that some reduction on this duty on small share transactions would do a great deal to spread the ownership of shares more widely.
