HC Deb 17 December 1959 vol 615 c1635
30. Mr. Dugdale

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will consider making a grant to holders of the Albert Medal in gold.

Mr. R. A. Butler

It has never been the custom for civilian awards for gallantry made by the Sovereign to be associated with monetary grants from Government funds, and I do not think it would be appropriate to make an exception in this case.

Mr. Dugdale

Is this not an exceptional medal? Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that, as far as I know, there are only three or four holders of it and that the sum involved would not be very great? Is it not a fact that, in the case of the George Cross, consideration has been given to a possible award?

Mr. Butler

What I have said is correct. There is a difference in the case of the Victoria Cross, which is accompanied by a monetary grant. As I have said, awards for gallantry made by the Sovereign are not accompanied. While I quite understand the right hon. Gentleman's interest, I do not think we can depart from precedent.
