HC Deb 08 December 1959 vol 615 c211
21. Mr. W. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is aware of the increasing need for further social amenities in Glenrothes; and, in view of the anticipated acceleration in the population increase, if he will take urgent steps to facilitate the provision of such amenities.

Mr. Maclay

I agree that the provision of social facilities in the new towns must keep pace with the growth of population and I have suggested to the development corporation a basis of cooperation between them, the responsible local authorities and the voluntary bodies concerned, which I hope will help towards the submission of agreed proposals.

Mr. Hamilton

Can the right hon. Gentleman be a little more specific, especially on the provision of a cinema? Can he indicate whether he will approve of the development corporation going forward itself with the provision of this amenity?

Mr. Maclay

I am at present considering a proposal by the development corporation that it should be authorised to build and run a cinema. I will let the hon. Member know as soon as I can how that matter stands.
