HC Deb 28 April 1959 vol 604 c1092
33. Sir L. Plummer

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what amendments to the Constitution of the Bahamas have been effected since the recent labour troubles; and what further amendments are proposed.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

As I said in reply to a Question by the hon. Member for Rugby (Mr. J. Johnson) on 26th March, a Bill is now before the local Legislature embodying the changes set out in the statement made in reply to a Question by my hon. Friend the Member for Surbiton (Mr. Fisher) at the conclusion of my visit to the Bahamas last April.

Sir L. Plummer

The Colonial Secretary said in April last year that he hoped that the necessary legislation would be through by the end of last year. What is holding it up? Is there any sabotage of the right hon. Gentleman's intentions for an amended Constitution?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

No. I would not use such strong language as that. I repeat that I am determined to see, in letter and in practice, the carrying out of the announcement I made.
