HC Deb 14 April 1959 vol 603 cc867-8
Mr Wood

I beg to move, in page 1, line 10, to leave out "less than three" and insert "more than seven ".

The Amendment gives effect to an undertaking which I gave in Committee, and is in two parts. First, by inserting the words "more than seven " it ensures that my right hon. Friend will not be able to prescribe any period longer than seven years within which a factory must be repainted. The Amendment also deletes the words "less than three ", which meant that a lesser period could not be prescribed. It would be no pro- tection to the worker in the factory to debar my right hon. Friend from prescribing periods of less than three years for painting if he thought that that was necessary in the interests of cleanliness.

Mr Lee

This point was discussed at great length in Committee and there was substantial agreement between both sides on the desirability of introducing some such words as the Minister has now tabled on the Notice Paper. We are grateful for the Amendment and accept it. We feel that it will probably do a very good job of work, and I have no wish to oppose it in any way.

Amendment agreed to.
