HC Deb 13 April 1959 vol 603 cc623-4
7. Mr. Chetwynd

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance to what extent the repayments of post-war credits to persons receiving National Assistance will be disregarded in assessing resources for qualification for assistance.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The National Assistance Board tells me that repayment to a person receiving National Assistance will not involve any reduction in his assistance.

Mr. Chetwynd

Whilst thanking the Minister for that reply, which is very welcome, may I ask whether he can give an estimate of the numbers likely to be affected by this concession, and will he consider at the same time whether it can apply not only 12 weeks after the date of the Budget but also to those who have already been 12 weeks on National Assistance?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The second part of that supplementary question should lie to my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer. My answer to the first part is, "Not without notice, Sir."
