HC Deb 08 April 1959 vol 603 c170
5. Mr. Atkins

asked the Minister of Defence whether he will increase the strength and effectiveness of the forces in the Far East, by authorising the commissioning of one of the aircraft carriers at present in reserve.

Mr. C. Ian Orr-Ewing

I have been asked to reply.

One carrier is already stationed in the Far East. Should it be necessary to reinforce the station, another carrier already in commission would be sent.

Mr. Atkins

Can my hon. Friend tell me the cost of maintaining a fully modernised aircraft carrier and what would be the cost of maintaining the not quite so modern but still very useful carriers which are at present in reserve?

Mr. Orr-Ewing

The cost of maintaining a modern carrier is £3 million a year. In addition, the number needed to man her would be 2,000 men. I am afraid that, without notice, I cannot give the cost of maintaining slightly less modern carriers, but perhaps my hon. Friend will put a Question on the Notice Paper on that point.
