HC Deb 07 April 1959 vol 603 c17
33. Mr. Stonehouse

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies which recommendations of the World Health Organisation Nutrition Survey in Uganda are being accepted by the Uganda Government; what measures are being taken to implement them; and which recommendations are being rejected.

The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Alan Lennox-Boyd)

The recommendations have only recently reached the Governor of Uganda and are still being examined.

Mr. Stonehouse

Is the Secretary of State aware that the distressingly high child mortality rate in Uganda, where four out of ten children die before they reach the age of 14, is due partly to the serious malnutrition in the country? In view of the good work done by the World Health Organisation, will the right hon. Gentleman consider inviting that organisation to establish a permanent malnutrition advisory team in the Protectorate?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

Before answering that question we had better all await the reading of the report; I had better await it and the Governor as well. At first sight, the report seems to be basically sound.
