HC Deb 07 April 1959 vol 603 cc24-5
46. Mr. G. Jeger

asked the Prime Minister to what extent his recent discussions with President Eisenhower included the admission of China to the United Nations.

The Prime Minister

As the hon. Member will be aware, it is not customary to divulge the details of confidential conversations with foreign statesmen.

Mr. Jeger

Does the right hon. Gentleman not agree that if China were a member of the United Nations it would be far easier to have her behaviour discussed and universally condemned?

The Prime Minister

I do not know whether election to a society is because of the virtues or of the vices of the member to be elected.

Mr. Jeger

In the case of Hungary and Suez, membership of the United Nations proved an effective factor.

The Prime Minister

This is a point which the hon. Gentleman has made and I note it, hut he has asked me a Question to which I have made a reply, and I hope he will be content with having made his point.
