HC Deb 07 April 1959 vol 603 cc11-2
19. Mr. Stevens

asked the President of the Board of Trade how many inquiries concerning new factory building have been referred by him since 30th September, 1958, to the area represented by the hon. Member for Portsmouth, Langstone.

Mr. J. Rodgers

Since 30th September, 1958, the Board of Trade has drawn the attention of approximately 30 industrialists to Portsmouth, mostly in respect of the Langstone Constituency area.

Mr. Stevens

Is my hon. Friend aware that the steps his Department has taken since last September have gone a great way towards allaying the anxieties and disappointments caused by his Department's refusal to grant an industrial development certificate to British Nylon Spinners, but is he further aware that there is still a considerable way to go? Will he, therefore, continue the very good efforts so far made?

Mr. Rodgers

I am very grateful to my hon. Friend for his remarks. I should like to inform him that the occupation by the Plessey Company of the Admiralty Under Water Research Establishment should provide substantial additional employment soon.
