§ 43. Mr. Timmonsasked the Minister of Labour, in view of the large numbers of young people who left school in June of this year in Lanarkshire, and are still unemployed, what steps he proposes to take to find employment for them.
§ The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour and National Service (Mr. Richard Wood)Only a small proportion of the boys and girls who left school in June in Lanarkshire are at present unemployed. The officers of the Youth Employment Service are making every effort to place them in employment.
§ Mr. TimmonsIs the hon. Member aware that 4,382 youngsters left school in June and that more than 50 per cent. of those children are running about, just unemployed, and selling rolls at midnight? Has not a serious social problem been created as a consequence of this state of affairs?
§ Mr. WoodI am afraid that the hon. Gentleman's information is slightly false. Out of the 4,382 boys and girls who left school in June, 1958, there were registered for employment on 14th November last only 130.
