HC Deb 25 November 1958 vol 596 cc194-5
6. Mr. Timmons

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will consider making more generous grants to persons willing to give up their employment to train for the teaching profession.

Mr. Maclay

The rates of grant payable under the special recruitment scheme were increased only last month by approximately 15 per cent.

Mr. Timmons

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that I know of many young people who are willing to give up their employment in order to go to college and to universities to train as teachers but who find that the allowances which are provided for them are hopelessly inadequate?

Mr. Maclay

I think this recent increase is a help. The hon. Member may be interested to know that the recent advertisements have produced a good many inquiries; 481 people have been accepted to begin study in the current session.
