HC Deb 25 November 1958 vol 596 cc209-10
33. Mr. Russell

asked the President of the Board of Trade what proportion of United Kingdom exports to the six Common Market countries will be liable to duty after the common external tariff comes into operation on 1st January; and what estimate he has formed of the effect on these exports of the coming into operation of the first 10 per cent. reduction in the internal tariffs of the Six.

Mr. J. Rodgers

The common external tariff is not due to come into full operation until between 11 and 14 years from now, and the first steps towards it need not be taken before 1962. I cannot say what proportion of our exports to the Six would then be affected. As regards the second part of the Question, it is not possible to assess in advance the effects on our exports of any tariff discrimination there may be after 1st January.
