§ 32. Mr. Oramasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what request he received at his recent meeting with the Foreign Secretary of Yugoslavia for a loan to Yugoslavia; and what was the reply of Her Majesty's Government.
§ Mr. Selwyn LloydI discussed with the Yugoslav Foreign Minister the possibility of a loan. I am now considering the matter further with my colleagues and no decision has yet been reached. Hon. Members will realise the very heavy calls on the financial resources available.
§ Mr. OramIn considering this matter, will the right hon. Gentleman realise that, should he turn down this request from Yugoslavia, he will be losing an opportunity to make friends and influence people in a country which occupies a vital position politically in the world?
§ Mr. LloydI think that our relations with Yugoslavia are well established on a basis of friendship, even though we may differ on some topics. I do not consider that the issue of this loan would affect these relations either way. I think that we are good enough friends for a decision to be taken, but I am aware of the opportunity and I hope I shall have a favourable reply to make; but no decision has yet been reached.
