HC Deb 19 November 1958 vol 595 cc1126-7
13. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Minister of Defence if he will give further information about the expenditure of£4½ million on the expedition to Jordan

Mr. Sandys

This additional expenditure was due mainly to the cost of moving men, equipment and stores.

Mr. Hughes

What have we as a country got for the expenditure of £4½million at a time when we are threatened with inflation? Is that not a very big sum for safeguarding King Hussein, when he is not safe after all?

Mr. Sandys

Our direct assistance averted an external threat to overthrow the lawful Government of Jordan. As a result of our action there is today in Jordan greater stability and confidence than there has been for a very long time.

Mr. Hughes

On a point of order. In view of the thoroughly unsatisfactory answer I have received, I beg to give notice that I will raise this matter on the Adjournment.
