§ 13. Mr. Emrys Hughesasked the Minister of Defence if he will give further information about the expenditure of£4½ million on the expedition to Jordan
§ Mr. SandysThis additional expenditure was due mainly to the cost of moving men, equipment and stores.
§ Mr. HughesWhat have we as a country got for the expenditure of £4½million at a time when we are threatened with inflation? Is that not a very big sum for safeguarding King Hussein, when he is not safe after all?
§ Mr. SandysOur direct assistance averted an external threat to overthrow the lawful Government of Jordan. As a result of our action there is today in Jordan greater stability and confidence than there has been for a very long time.
§ Mr. HughesOn a point of order. In view of the thoroughly unsatisfactory answer I have received, I beg to give notice that I will raise this matter on the Adjournment.
