HC Deb 11 November 1958 vol 595 c196
Mr. Woodburn

On a point of order. I asked your permission, Mr. Speaker, to put a Private Notice Question, but I am not sure what the final decision was. Have you made any decision as to whether the Prime Minister, or the Secretary of State for Scotland, is to make a statement about the dangerous cobalt particle which has been lost in Glasgow?

Mr. Speaker

If permission to ask a Private Notice Question has been refused, it is quite out of order to repeat it on the Floor of the House. The trouble with the right hon. Member's Question was that he did not put it in until a quarter to one today, which was too late. The rule followed by every Speaker has been that Private Notice Questions have to be in my twelve o'clock. It is necessary for a fair opportunity to be given to the Minister concerned to get the relevant information which sometimes means telegraphing over long distances. However, if the one o'clock news on the wireless was right, the right hon. Gentleman need not bother very much.

Mr. Woodburn

Further to that point of order. May I take it that the Secretary of State has not sought your permission to make a statement on this matter?

Mr. Speaker

No.
