HC Deb 11 November 1958 vol 595 cc185-6
37. Mrs. Braddock

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will consider allowing professional boxers to average their income from boxing over a period of three years.

Mr. Amory

I have noted the hon. Member's suggestion.

Mrs. Braddock

Will not the Chancellor look seriously at some of the tax returns from some of the professional boxers? He will discover that the State gets much more out of the professional boxers than the professional boxers get for themselves? Will he look at the matter before his next Budget statement?

Mr. Amory

I can well imagine that many professional pugilists earn very much more than a hard-worked Cabinet Minister. I am not sure whether the proposal of the hon. Lady would be of service to a number of pugilists, and particularly to those whose aggressive powers decline abruptly for one reason or another and whose earnings therefore drop equally abruptly.
