HC Deb 04 November 1958 vol 594 cc769-70
48. Mr. Malcolm MacPherson

asked the Prime Minister whether he will make a statement on the proposed new steel strip mill.

The Prime Minister

The Government are not yet in a position to make a statement on the proposed new mill.

Mr. MacPherson

In view of the statements and rumours that have been going about within the last ten days, can the Prime Minister give the House information on one or two points? Has a reassessment of the need been made and the project scaled down from the original conception? Will it be split between South Wales and Scotland, and if so, in what proportion? Finally, can he say anything about sites, either in Wales or in Scotland?

The Prime Minister

No, Sir. If I were in a position to answer all those questions I could now make the statement. I am afraid I shall have to ask the hon. Gentleman to wait a little longer; I hope not very long.
