HC Deb 04 November 1958 vol 594 c762
36. Sir R. Robinson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies when it is proposed to establish a coconut nursery in the north-west area of British Guiana; and what plans there are generally for developing coconut cultivation in the Colony.

Mr. Profumo

A coconut nursery was recently established in the Moruca area in the North West District, from which it is hoped to provide, in 1959, some 20,000 seedlings to be distributed to farmers in the area. Other nurseries have been established on the coast to produce in 1958–59, some 70,000 seedlings from selected high yielding parents. Other plans for the development of coconut cultivation include increased loans to producers to stimulate production; special attention by the Agricultural Department to the control of pests; the use of fertilizers, and the general rehabilitation of existing plantations.
