HC Deb 03 November 1958 vol 594 c585
10. Mr. Lipton

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will make a statement on the presentation ceremony that took place in Conference Room A at his Department on 21st October last.

The Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Mr. J. B. Godber)

At this ceremony I presented to our sausage manufacturers, on behalf of the Meat Packing Industry of the United States, a gold-plated hot dog. The occasion was one more manifestation of the cordial nature of Anglo-American relations in small as well as large matters.

Mr. Lipton

What has this tomfoolery to do with the Minister's official duties? Would he not be far better employed in trying to get British sausage manufacturers to agree to a minimum meat content in the sausages made in this country? How does he get involved in all this farcical fun and games?

Mr. Godber

I am always glad to take advice from the hon. Gentleman on tomfoolery, but in this matter perhaps I could call in aid the word of Horace when he said: Duke est desipere in loco.
