HC Deb 03 November 1958 vol 594 cc596-7
38. Mr. Palmer

asked the Paymaster-General if he will make a statement on the reasons for the withdrawal of the subsidy to the iron ore industry in Cleveland.

Sir I. Horobin

I understand that the steel industry, with the assent of the Iron and Steel Board, has withdrawn its subsidy to the iron ore mines in the Cleveland area because working has become increasingly uneconomic, and adequate supplies of ore are available elsewhere at economic prices.

Mr. Palmer

Does the hon. Gentleman appreciate that this decision has caused great concern in my constituency and that I intend to pursue the matter further on the Adjournment?

Sir L Horobin

Under the circumstances, I think it would be best if I did not say anything further at this stage.
