HC Deb 21 May 1958 vol 588 cc1269-70

Motion made, and Question proposed, That Mr. Speaker do issue his Warrant to the Clerk of the Crown to make out a new Writ for the electing of a Member to serve in this present Parliament for Argyll, in the room of Major Sir Duncan McCallum, M.C., deceased.—[Mr Heath.]

Mr. Woodburn

I recognise that this Motion is in accordance with custom, but it is only a few days since the hon. Member died. Does not the Patronage Secretary think it a little unseemly to rush this Writ at this time? Could not more time be left for this very difficult constituency to gather itself together for an unexpected election? It is one of the most difficult constituencies in the country, and there might be a certain amount of resentment at treating this constituency——

Mr. Speaker

Order. If the Motion is objected to, it must be left over until after Questions.

Motion, by leave, withdrawn.
