HC Deb 21 May 1958 vol 588 c1286
29. Mr. Braine

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what progress has been made with the proposal to widen the London—Shoeburyness road at Hadleigh, near the junction of Woodfield Road.

Mr. Nugent

I understand that the Essex County Council have decided in present circumstances not to carry out the scheme, which we had approved in principle, for a 44-foot wide divided carriageway at this point.

Mr. Braine

Is not my hon. Friend aware that there have been three fatal accidents at this spot over the last two years? Can he say what reasons have been given by the Essex County Council for refusing the very wise counsel given by his Department?

Mr. Nugent

I am not responsible for the reasons given by the Essex County Council. I believe that the proposed scheme would have made an improvement there, but the council is the highway authority and it is for it to decide.
