HC Deb 15 May 1958 vol 588 c578
1. Mr. Fenner Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will make a statement on the constitutional conference on the application of self-government to Singapore.

The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Alan Lennox-Boyd)

I began discussions with a delegation from Singapore on Monday. They are still in progress.

Mr. Brockway

Is it not the case that at the last conference the only point of difference was the right of subversives to stand for elections, and is there hope in the present discussions of a solution of that problem on democratic lines?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I would prefer not to anticipate the conclusion of the talks.
