HC Deb 08 May 1958 vol 587 cc1406-7
41. Mr. Rankin

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the Murray Barracks area of the military lands has now been surrendered to the Government of Hong Kong; and what steps have been proposed by the Government for its development for industrial and housing purposes.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The parade ground will revert to the Hong Kong Government in a few weeks from now, and the barracks not later than three months after the completion of substitute buildings. A traffic consultant from the United Kingdom will visit Hong Kong at the end of May to report on the development of the area.

Mr. Rankin

As political, industrial and business interests have pressed for this land for nearly 35 years, will the right hon. Gentleman assure us that he will see that the greatest possible use is made of it in order to relieve the appalling housing situation in Hong Kong?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

Of course, and it has fallen to the present Government in the United Kingdom to help the Hong Kong Government to carry out this successful arrangement.
